German Premiere of La Passion de Simone by Kaija Saariaho in Berlin

On November 25 and 26 the Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Quartet of the Rundfunkchor Berlin will perform the German premiere of the chamber version of La Passion de Simone by Kaija Saariaho. The performances, staged by Peter Sellars, will take place at Deutsche Oper Berlin and will be conducted by Duncan Ward.

La Passion de Simone is a modern oratorio for soprano, choir, orchestra and electronic. The Solo Soprano explores the life and work of the brave French philosopher Simone Weil by shining a light on her ideas, her social commitment and her radicalism in reacting to the social and political circumstances. The libretto was written by Amin Maalouf.

The same production of La Passion de Simone by Peter Sellars will be given at the 70th Ojai Music Festival in June 2016 together with the American premiere of Saariaho’s new opera Only the Sound Remains.

In May 2015 Schwetzinger SWR Festspiele hosts a composer portrait of Kaija Saariaho featuring prominent chamber, ensemble and choral works. Among others, her piece Sombre will receive its German premiere, and a visualized concert will be deviced be Jean-Baptiste Barriere. The three-part portrait will take place at Schwetzinger Schloss moderated by the composer.
