Biography
French composer César Franck was born on December 10th 1822 in Liège, Belgium. He gave his first concerts in this city in 1834 before moving to Paris in 1835 and studying privately with teachers including Anton Reicha. He returned briefly to Belgium before coming back to Paris and settling there to begin a career as a pianist and organist. He was appointed as organist at Sainte-Clotilde in 1858 and remained in this position for the rest of his life. In 1872 he became professor of organ at the Paris Conservatory, taking French nationality as required by the job. Whilst in this role he taught students including Vincent d’Indy, Ernest Chausson, Louis Vierne, Charles Tournemire, Guillaume Lekeu and Henri Duparc. In this time he also wrote a number of works that are part of today’s standard repertory. Franck died on November 8th 1890. His funeral was attended by a large number of people including a large proportion of the eminent composers in Paris at that time.
