Programme Note
Sixty Salutations was written in celebration of conductor Martyn Brabbins' 60th birthday. It is one of a series of Variations on an original theme modelled on Elgar's Enigma Variations entitled Pictured Within.
Martyn asked me to write the variation equivalent to Elgar’s ‘Dorabella’. From my own oboe-playing days, I immediately recalled the flickering woodwind figures throughout that movement, and wrote sixty of these (in honour of MB’s age) based on a chorale-like harmonisation I made out of the ‘Pictured Within’ theme. I’m so glad to have this chance to salute a warm, honest conductor who loves and supports new British music.
