Programme Note
Carrington-Brown in TURNADOT

The first and smallest Brexit Operetta in the world
2 Acts . 2 Actors . 1 Cello

Sometimes nothing happens for decades and then a whole century passes within a week. All of a sudden, the events are overturning, and you don't even know where is up or where is down! So, it is with Carrie Puddleton and Lawrence Longstaff, the cellist and the chorus singer who are the only two members of the Royal Imperial Victorian Opera Company from good old England, who managed to reach mainland Europe. Brexit claims more victims!

The two are therefore confronted with the mammoth task of performing Puccini's great opera "Turandot" alone. An impossible task, one might think. It is inevitable that things will go wrong. Thus, they not only twist the name of the title character, but also quickly throw a few storylines into each other. Strangely enough, the protagonists of the opera gain amazingly in topicality. To be or not to be is the question here!

The music and comedy duo Carrington-Brown, alias Rebecca Carrington and Colin Brown, together with the ingenious cello Joe, have spun a turbulent operetta that not only deals with the hair-raising motifs of the old Persian fairy tale, but also targets current European politics. (On behalf of LUDWIGSBURGER SCHLOSSFESTSPIELE)

»I think it's great that after all those years in which Carrington-Brown entertained us with their wonderful performances at the Schlossfestspiele, we are now bringing a joint premiere to the stage. The original idea was to create the "smallest operetta in the world" for two musicians and a cello. Then Brexit and the wild Brexiteers came across from the small Island of Great Britain to Europe and gave us the food for our operetta! Mixing this madness musically and finally seasoning it with the heart-rending motifs from "Turandot" and the razor sharp, dry British humour of Carrington-Brown seemed more than compelling to us. «
Thomas Wördehoff (Director Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele)
