Programme Note
Exploring anxiety and mental health in its many manifestations, Jocelyn Pook concludes her trilogy, with Hysteria: A Song Cycle for Singer and Psychiatrist. In partnership with the Wellcome Trust, the song cycle received its world premiere in July 2018, one month after Mental Awareness Week 2018, which focused on the theme of stress.
This multi-media concert piece focuses on the impact of psychological trauma and stress on the body. It combines testimonials of 10 people's experiences of psychosomatic phenomena, alongside conversations with psychiatrist Dr Stephanie Courtade. Scored for mezzo-soprano, viola, two cellos and recorded voices, with an accompanying video work by Georgina Anderson & Dragan Aleksic, the music continues to explore health and illness in contemporary society.
The work is part of Pook's Mental Health Trilogy, a collection of compelling and relevant works exploring mental health and psychological trauma in all its manifestations:
