Programme Note

This concerto for piano and orchestra was the last work I wrote before embarking on the 2-year ‘journey’ that was the composition of my 3rd opera; Malaspina, o la Idea de la felicidad (Malaspina, or the Idea of Happiness), based on the 18th century naval expedition undertaken by Alessandro Malaspina for the Spanish crown. I was already beginning to research the subject matter and together with my librettist, Pierre Élie Mamou, we decided on two main characters: Malaspina and Tadeus Haenke, a Bohemian botanist, doctor, musician and artist. For reasons which sometimes are historically inexplicable, both men and their work remained unknown for the next century and a half – relegated to silence. Therefore it seemed appropriate to dedicate the piece I was working on to their memory: Geographies of Silence.
