Programme Note

Instrumentation: Flute (doubling Alto-flute), Violin, Clarinet in Sib, Vibraphone (doubling glockenspiel and crotales) and piano (pref. with 3 pedals). Separate mike-amplification of each singer.

Liederkreis is a song-cycle (or rather: two independent song-cycles) in the most literal sense; 5 songs from Schumann are organized in a large circle within which each song is rotating forwards and backwards in several different tempo-layers at the same time. The circle consists of two independent, but complementary orbits, - one for each singer. In the course of juxtaposition and overlapping of the single songs, the words of the (German) texts blend in constantly changing ways, thus creating always new word-patterns (i.e. “meanings”).

Amplification is used occasionally to make it possible for the singers to be clearly heard when singing in very soft and un-exposed ways. The following Schumann-songs are used: “Nun ast du mir den ersten Schmerz getan” (Chamiso, “Frauenliebe und Leben”), “Ich wandelte unter den Bäumen” (Heine, “Liederkreis”, op. 24), “Im Walde” (Eichendorf, “Liederkreis” op 39), “Seit ich ihn gesehen” (Chamisso, Frauenliebe und Leben) and “Frühlingsnacht” (Eichendorf, “Liederkreis” op.39).
