Universe Birds is composed to a poem by Iben Holk, who inspired several of Abrahamsen's early works. It is written for 10 sopranos (in 5 parts).

Universe Birds:
BLUE
an egg
swells
like a bubble
in the flesh
the blood
sends
into the soul
its songs
a word
breaks loose
out
into the blue

UNIVERSE BIRDS
in
waves in
beauty
and blackbird
shines
in
waves in
beauty
and sunshine
dazzles
in
waves in
beauty
and sky-blue
waves
in
waves in
beauty
and silence
rises
in
waves in
beauty
and starry milk
flows
in
waves in
beauty
and spacefoam
in
waves in
beauty
and lightsecret
diffuses
in
white birds
as songs
over the earth

AIR
i was
suddenly
so tired
the stewardess
gave me
a blue blanket
and i slept
suddenly
out of one
sleepy eye
the runway
appeared
and again
we were
in the air
