Programme Note

Burn means as well ´being on fire´ as ´a stream´ and thereby the title connects the two characters which pervade the 13-14 minutes long work: circling, eddying and heavily falling streams. This also points to the original title of the work - Illumination (Light my fire).

All my orchestral works (besides symphonies) since 1949, carry titles associating to colours or lights: “Iris”, “Luna”, “Voyage into the Golden Screen”, “Twilight” – and now “Burn”.

There is no programme behind these choices, but, perhaps, an unconscious recognition that the ways of light and sound are related?

The work was commissioned by the Scottish National Orchestra.
