Programme Note
Dedicated to the memory of Charles Ives, Brubeck's They All Sang Yankee Doodle takes the well-known Revolutionary War tune and weaves it through a series of clever variations. Brubeck comments that "the piece, in a sense, is an autobiography, made up of memories and snatches of tunes imprinted from my early childhood. Yankee Doodle is interwoven with other folk and national melodies to stitch a tapestry, or more precisely, a patchwork, designed to depict American history through combining fragments of popular tunes."
