Programme Note
The piece is, quite literally, a continuous build-up, metaphorically similar to the construction of a large building. Thus, the general character should gradually move from almost standstill to high intensity just before the end.
From measure 2 the piece has a continuous, totally gradual accelerando until the end.
In measure 122 1st violin, viola, celli and doublebass continue in tempo, regardless of the ritardando subito until the end of the bar, while the rest of the instruments perform ritardando as indicated.
