Programme Note
The words of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis have always held a special place in my affections and in fact I set the Latin text of the Magnificat for choir and orchestra for the 1968 City of London Festival.
I was therefore particularly pleased to by asked by John Birch to write an English setting for choir and organ for the Southern Cathedrals Festival. I am currently working on a full-length opera, and was happy to take a break from such a mammoth task to set these very moving texts.
