Programme Note

This little cantata was commissioned by Carl Dolmetsch and first performed by
Elizabeth Harwood (soprano), Jeanne Dolmetsch (sopranino/treble recorder), Marguerite
Dolmetsch (viola da gamba) and Joseph Saxby (harpsichord) at the Wigmore Hall on
22 March 1979.
The text comes from The Fairy Queen, Part 1, Canto 3, by Edmund Spenser (c.1552-
88) in which a hungry lion comes across the young queen. Instead of devouring her, he is
charmed and befriends her in the most touching scenes which follow.
