Honorary Doctorate for Arnold
Sir Malcolm Arnold has been granted an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Northampton in a special ceremony held at the composer’s home in Norfolk. The ceremony was attended by the university’s Vice Chancellor, Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic) and Chairman of the Governing Council.

Now in his eighty-fifth year, Sir Malcolm was born and grew up in Northampton before winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London at the age of sixteen. In his encomium of the composer, the Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Bush described Arnold as “without doubt one of the most versatile, prolific and fluent composers of the 20th century”.
