On the occasion of his 80th birthday this month, it is a privilege for G. Schirmer to celebrate the remarkable life and work of John Corigliano. Corigliano's oeuvre contains over 100 scores, each one wildly different from the next, and the diversity of ideas and techniques within each piece mirrors the multiplicity of his catalog. From works for solo piano all the way up through The Ghosts of Versailles (one of the most successful operas of the past 50 years), he exudes an innate sense of drama and lyricism, a magician's flair for surprise and theatrics, and an uncanny ability to interpolate the strange and the sublime. As Steve Smith once put it in The New York Times, Corigliano is an 'enfant terrible grown into an elder statesman, his prodigious, provocative faculties razor sharp'.
This selection of performances from spring 2018 represents a broad survey of Corigliano's greatest works across multiple genres — from ballet and orchestra to film and chamber music — including four portrait concerts in addition to the Russian and Japanese premieres of major symphonic works from his extensive catalog.
