Left, alone in Copenhagen

Jumpy and jazzy in the beginning, then transitioning into disruptive waves of bright sound and apprehensive silences, this music is unmistakeably by Hans Abrahamsen. His Concerto for Piano Left Hand, Left, alone, of course takes its title from the fact that the soloist plays with only the one hand. However, when spoken aloud and in passing, the comma is inaudible and its meaning is more melancholic. The music reflects this: on occasion the soloist is left alone to wander in a dark and silent place.

The concerto is written for the French pianist Alexandre Tharaud who performed the World Premiere with the WDR Symphony Orchestra in January and who is also performing with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra for the Danish premiere this coming Thursday, October 13. Thomas Dausgaard is conducting.

The recording of Hans Abrahamsen’s song cycle let me tell you recently received The Gramophone Award for Contemporary Music.
