The Hallé Choir commissions for the first time
For the first time in living memory, the Hallé Choir has commissioned a new choral work. Christ’s Nativity by John McCabe , is 12 minutes long and written for double choir and organ. It is a setting of a poem of that name by Henry Vaughan - long a favourite poet of McCabe’s, opening with the line ‘Awake, glad heart! Get up, and sing; It is the Birth-day of thy King’ .

The commissioning of the work was a true community experience in every sense, with all members helping to raise funds – from cake sales and professional portraits, to sponsoring specific parts of the vocal score. This work with the Hallé is particularly important to McCabe as he has great fondness for the organisation since studying at the Royal Manchester College of Music (now the RNCM).

Christ’s Nativity will receive its world premiere at the choir’s Christmas concert on December 14 at Halle St Peter’s, Manchester. Accompanied by organist Jonathan Scott and conducted by Madeleine Venner, more news on the event can be found here.
