Danish composer Niels Rosing-Schow has composed this year's new piece for the Carl Nielsen Competition which takes place in Odense, Denmark. The piece ... aus atmen ... will be premiered at the semi-finales

He explains that "a piece written for a competition can fall into different categories, the extremely virtuosic piece or the very emotionally expressive piece for instance. My piece is virtuosic, but only in as much as it feels natural and contributes to the compositional aspects that are of interest to me at the moment. Microintervals, timbre-trills and control of the embouchure when playing flageolettes are some of the techniques I use. But the piece also requires a good musical overview because the form is - if not labyrinthic then - mosaique-like."

Niels Rosing-Schow also talks about his relationship to Carl Nielsen. "Like all other Danish composers, I've been programmed next to Nielsen's music on many occasions. In fact I at one point had a little too much of him. That has changed and my interest in him as a man and as a composer has increased. His flute concerto has not been very present to me while writing this piece though. I think my piece will work as a kind of counterpoint to Nielsen's great concerto, or a supplement, maybe."

Rosing-Schow is one of many composers from Edition Wilhelm Hansen who has composed pieces for the Carl Nielsen Competition over the years. Other examples are Andy Pape with the piece Searching (2001), Karl Aage Rasmussen and his piece Pièce de Concours (2010) and Poul Ruders with the piece Trio Transcendantale (2011).
