Spanish Premiere of Daniel Catan's 'Il Postino'

Commissioned by Los Angeles Opera and co-produced by Theater and der Wien (Vienna) and Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris), Il Postino will be performed at Madrid’s prestigious opera house Teatro Real for the first time in Spain on July 17th. Vicente Ombuena will delight the audience in the role of the famous poet Pablo Neruda. Leonardo Capalbo (Mario Ruoppolo) and Cristina Gallardo-Domâs (Matilde Neruda) complete the cast conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado under the stage direction of Ron Daniels.

Based on Michael Radford’s homonymous film and on the novel Ardiente paciencia (“Burning Patience”, 1985) by Antonio Skármeta, Il Postino encompasses two of the most universal topics for the composer Daniel Catán: art and love: “[…] the foundations upon which we build our lives. Love is what makes us human. Art is our most sophisticated tool for achieving that humanity. And opera is one of the most complete art forms ever imagined, for it includes music and poetry”

Il Postino tells the tale of a shy young postman in a tiny Italian fishing village, who finds the inspiration to live out his dreams during his daily deliveries to his only customer, the poet Neruda who is in political exile.
