A Scream and an Outrage

Nico Muhly curates new music at the Barbican’s May marathon weekend, this year entitled A Scream and an Outrage.
Muhly’s intentions for this event include “composers writing for their friends, and creating environments for great performances.” The line-up features multi-genre composers and performers who have worked with celebrated acts such as Sigur Ros, Arcade Fire and Grizzly Bear to key 21st century composers Philip Glass, John Adams and Terry Riley.
The Barbican and St Luke’s will play host to six concerts incorporating works by Music Sales composers. The programme is set to include the world premieres of Muhly’s choral work An outrage performed by the BBC Singers and new percussion concerto man made by Pulitzer-Prize winning composer David Lang presented by So Percussionists in collaboration with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
The Bang on a Can collective (founded by Julia Wolfe, Michael Gordon and David Lang) and Trio Medieval will perform works devoted to folk melodies and minimalism at St Luke’s including Three Songs by Muhly, Riley’s Tread on the Trail and Wolfe’s Steel Hammer. The same venue will also see the Calder Quartet performing Michael Nyman’s String Quartet No. 3 and a new string quartet work by Joby Talbot.
May 12, a day not to be missed, will feature a highly anticipated performance of Philip Glass’s complete twenty Etudes for Piano delivered by Muhly and Glass. The climax of this event will include a performance by Muhly, Shara Wordon and violinst Pekka Kuusisto of Lang’s Schubert-inspired song cycle Death Speaks.
