News - Malcolm Arnold Festival, Northampton, 21st to 23rd October

Tuesday, October 11, 2011
2011 is the 90th anniversary of Malcolm Arnold's birth and The Malcolm Arnold Festival will be celebrating this with an appropriately grand gesture! The Festival will include all of his nine symphonies, performed and introduced by a mixture of celebrated guests and orchestras.

The Festival will be launched by the legendary actor Robert Hardy and the first concert on 21st October will include the 1st and 2nd symphonies, performed by the Cambridgeshire Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Steve Bingham.

Arnold was undoubtedly a major symphonist: his very personal sense of musical structure and development and his self-proclaimed announcement that "all my music is autobiographical" make these works enormously important within the corpus of twentieth-century British music.

The festival finale is a celebratory concert featuring Arnold's Ninth Symphony, an epic masterwork that took him five years to compose. This is to be performed by the Malcolm Arnold Festival Orchestra conducted by John Gibbons. Also included is Brahms' double concerto with the international violinist Nicola Benedetti.

The annual festival takes place in Northampton at the Royal & Derngate on 21–23 October, with a full weekend of concerts and talks.
