Sir Malcolm Arnold, one of Britain’s most versatile and best-loved composers, celebrates his 85th birthday in 2006.

Arnold is the author of nine symphonies, concertos for many of the world’s great musicians, ballets, and numerous film scores (including The Bridge on the River Kwai, Hobson’s Choice, and Whistle down the Wind). He has long been regarded as one of the most important figures in British music of the twentieth century and has a wide following which ranges from professional symphony orchestras to amateur and youth ensembles. Earlier this year Arnold was awarded the Incorporated Society of Musicians’ Distinguished Musician Award. The composer’s 85th birthday will be marked by a number of high profile performances and festivals.
