Phaedra premiere

Phaedra premiere
The new concert opera, Phaedra, by Hans Werner Henze will be premiered at Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin
on September 6 2007 as part of the musikfest berlin. This is a unique collaboration with many internationally renowned artists such as Magdalena Kožená, John Mark Ainsely, Marlis Petersen, Axel Köhler as soloists and the artistic team includes Peter Mussbach, Michael Boder, Olafur Eliasson and Olaf Freese amongst others. In the following year the production will be toured by the Ensemble Modern to LaMonnaie, Brussels, Alte Oper Frankfurt, and Wiener Festspiele, Vienna.
The libretto by Christian Lehnert stretches far beyond the Greek myth of the queen Phaedra who falls for her stepson Hippolyt ending in a catastrophe. The first part recounts the story as told by Euripides, Racine and by Sarah Kane and the second part moves to part of the myth which appears in Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
